Located in Saumur in France`s Loire Valley, Langlois Chateau was founded in 1912 by Edouard Langlois and his wife Jeanne Chateau. Edouard was killed in 1915 while fighting in the Great War, and his widow took over the management of the estate, developing a range of traditional sparkling wines under the Cremant de Loire title. Today the estate has diversified into a high-quality range of still wines alongside its sparkling `Cremants`, and has 71 hectares of vineyard across the most famous terroir of the Loire Valley, including Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume and Saumur.

A couple of hours drive south of Paris, and to the west of Burgundy, the wine region of the Loire Valley is one of the most diverse in France. The quality of Loire wine is often overlooked, but they can offer serious value and are renowned for their classy style and fresh flavours. Starting on the Atlantic Coast in the city of Nantes, the region winds its way 300 miles up the Loire River through green, rural land to the pretty villages of the Upper Loire. The scattered nature of the appellations of the Loire host a wide range of soils and climatic conditions for making wine. The climate is cool, and the wines typically have fresh acidity and clean, pure flavours. Appellations of note include Touraine, Sancerre, Muscadet, Pouilly-Fume and Saumur-Champigny. The Loire's 4000 wineries produce a diverse range of wines across all three colours alongside sparkling Cremant de Loire and golden, sticky sweet wines. Most famously, the Loire is known for white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Chenin Blanc, while Cabernet Franc is the Loire's most famous red export.

Not to be confused with the well-known Burgundy village of Pouilly-Fuisse, Pouilly-Fume is one of the most recognised and prized white wines of the Loire Valley, alongside neighbouring Sancerre. The name combines the village of Pouilly, which sits at the centre of the vineyards, and the French term for Sauvignon Blanc, Blanc Fume. The fume refers to the smoky, flinty aroma found in the treasured Sauvignon Blancs made in the region. The distinctive wines of Pouilly-Fume are made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, and their vibrant, intense characteristics of gooseberry, nettle and grass, alongside stony minerality and nervy acidity make for some of the most easily recognisable wines in France. The flinty limestone soils and cool climate provide ideal conditions for growing Sauvignon Blanc and growing numbers of producers seek to add complexity to the pungent, pure flavours by using oak, adding complexity and a richer textural element to the finished wines.

Originating in Bordeaux, Sauvignon Blanc has now established itself in many of the world‘s wine regions, producing a crisp, dry, and refreshing white varietal wine with a distinct flavour profile. The most well-known examples come from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume in the Loire Valley, and from Marlborough in New Zealand where a grassy, herbaceous style is produced. In Bordeaux it is blended with Semillon to make the sweet wines of Sauternes, and crisp dry wines that can be as excellent as they are expensive.
