Viu Manent

Viu Manent was created in 1935 when the Catalonian immigrant Miguel Viu-García and his two sons Agustín and Miguel Viu-Manent founded Bodegas Viu in Santiago de Chile. In 1966, Miguel bought the Hacienda San Carlos de Cunaco in Colchagua and changed the winery name to Viu Manent. This traditional estate included 150 hectares of vineyards, as well as a winery and manor house. Since 2000, the winery has been in the hands of the third generation of the family with Jose Miguel Viu and their aim still rings true now as it did almost 100 years ago. to produce outstanding wines that are consistent in quality. The “Secreto” or “Secret” range uses several varieties to make very expressive fresh and aromatic blends, each with a very closely guarded secret—the winemaker includes a 15% component that only he knows. This is the secret. Viu Manent also commissions the famous Chilean artist Catalina Abbot to create the labels.

Central Valley

The Central Valley region dominates the wine scene in Chile, accounting for over 80 percent of production. Made up of several sub-regions, including the Maipo Valley, Colchagua and the Casablanca Valley the region stretches for 400 kilometres from north to south and is home to some of the country's biggest producers. Its large size and variable topography present a broad range of climatic conditions, soils and styles. Vineyards are planted on coastal plains, in the foothills of the Andes and at rocky altitudes of up to 750 metres. As a result a diverse variety of grapes are planted across the region. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay all have homes here, as does Carmenere, Chile's flagship grape. Experimental and innovative producers are always seeking to develop new, cooler sites amongst the coastal areas and river valleys, resulting in plantings of Riesling and Viognier.

Colchagua

The southernmost region of the larger Rapel Valley, Colchagua is one of the premier wine regions in Chile. Cooler than the Maipo Valley to the north, Colchagua maintains a temperate Mediterranean climate. The valley is home to a diverse range of grapes: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are popular in the ocean-cooled western vineyards, while in the warmer eastern vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Merlot all take-up space. Colchagua is one of the two largest regions in the Central Valley, and varied topography and soils are found as a result. As with most wine regions the steeper slopes are the most desirable. The free-draining gravelly soils force the vines to grow their roots deep into the earth looking for moisture, which results in healthy vines that produce low yields of concentrated fruit. Known by many as a region with great potential, the wines from Colchagua certainly show class and the future is bright

Syrah

Syrah, most famously found growing in the northern Rhone Valley, is a dark-skinned grape capable of producing diverse wines of various flavours and styles. Typically known for its dark-berry fruit flavour and distinct black pepper aroma, Syrah wines age well, and develop complex flavours of leather, licorice and woody herbs. Outside of the Rhone, good examples of Syrah can be found in New Zealand, the United States and South America. Australia has a style of its own, famously known the world over as Shiraz.
