The Story of Nyetimber

The Story of Nyetimber

English sparkling wine is simply going from strength to strength, the quality is improving all the time and they are achieving many awards and accolades, often winning in blind tastings over Grandes Marques Champagnes. There are over 100 wineries in UK and two thirds of production is sparkling wine. Nyetimber are one of the pioneers of the industry and are considered the benchmark for premium quality English Sparkling wine. It is the sparkling of choice at the majority of state banquets and government functions and has put the category firmly on the map and in the minds of wine lovers around the world.

Nyetimber is one of England's leading sparkling wine producers, they were one of the first producers to plant vines in 1988. In 2006, Eric Heerema became the Owner and Custodian of Nyetimber, believing that the estate, with its ideal soil and location, had the potential to be truly great. Eric recruited Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs and Winemaker Brad Greatrix, who both shared his vision of crafting the finest English sparkling wines.

The estate owns 100% of their vineyards and all of their wines are produced from the grapes planted on 152 hectares of some of the best sites in West Sussex and Hampshire. Tucked into the lee of the South Downs to protect the grapes from the cool English Channel breezes, Nyetimber's vineyards provide all of the fruit to make their exceptional English sparkling wines.

The vineyards are exclusively planted with the holy trinity of sparkling wine grapes:  Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir on south facing slopes, with either sandy or chalk soils, similar to those of Champagne.
