A Taste of Bordeaux 2009

A Taste of Bordeaux 2009

For many centuries Bordeaux has been, and continues to this day, to be the centre of the wine world with many of the greatest wines coming from the impressive Bordelais chateaux. Cool winters, warm summers and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean create the perfect conditions for classic, structured and age-worthy wines made from the traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

The 2009 vintage is one of the best on record in the last 20 years, so a decade on from being bottled we are delighted to offer you this exclusive opportunity to discover these limited edition exclusive wines in our ‘taste of Bordeaux 2009' offer. These unique bottles were created for the Club Elite collection and inspired by the “Epoque” model used in the 19th century for the great chateaux: Talbot, Gruaud Larose, Meyney….  An elegant and traditional shaped bottle with a modern twist.

Chateau Pouget, Margaux 2009 Chateau Pouget, Margaux 2009

Chateau Pouget, Margaux 2009

A 10-hectare vineyard neighbouring the famous estates of Chateau Brane-Cantenac and Chateau Kirwan, planted with 35-year-old vines that produced a rich, dark and exceptionally concentrated wine in 2009.

Chateau Pouget got its name from François-Antoine Pouget who took over the estate in 1748.  The Maréchal-Duc de Richelieu, a great wine-lover, awarded the chateau the coat of arms that still features on its label to this day. But it was in 1855 that Chateau Pouget really found its place in the history of the great Bordeaux wines, when it was admitted as a 4th Grand Cru Classé.  The Duke de Richelieu is at the origin of the coat of arms and motto of Chateau Pouget.  Since 1906, the estate has been in the hands of the Guillemet family. Technical director Lucien Guillemet puts his great experience into making sure his wine expresses all the beauty of these gravel soils envied the world over.

A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon,30% Merlot,4% Cabernet Franc.  Tasting Note: A classic Margaux, effortlessly combining finesse and substance. The majestic, dense and dark purple robe sparkles invitingly, while the delicate nose entices with its intense bouquet of ripe red fruits, dark berries and wild cherry. The full, dense flavour is backed by voluptuous tannins, the fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes harvested at the peak of their maturity, endowing this wine with a wonderful richness, volume and depth of flavour. A great sensation on the palate, with seductive blackcurrant and blueberry flavours. The balance and strength of this elegant wine reflect the noble character of this prestigious appellation. Expressing the full potential of the fruit, the dense and flavoursome tannins build to a very long, fresh finish, with notes of sweet cinnamon. A magnificent wine, from an exceptional vintage.  Drink now to 2030.

Clos Vieux Taillefer, Pomerol 2009Clos Vieux Taillefer, Pomerol 2009

Clos Vieux Taillefer, Pomerol 2009

A jewel in the heart of Pomerol that has been owned by the Robin family since 1875. With the iconic consultant Stephane Derenoncourt at the helm, the 2009 offering was awarded the “world’s best Merlot” by the IWSC.  Praise indeed

The estate of  Clos Vieux Taillefer features on the oldest maps of the wine region found to date, and the archives show that it has been in the Robin family since 1768.  Today, Alexandra and Nicolas Robin feel they have something more than a historic jewel, for the real treasure is hidden away underground, a few metres down, in that layer of iron that shapes the truly great Pomerol, and gives this cru its name and character. This wine is the fruit of painstaking work in the vineyards and the winery, with rigorous fruit selection and a bespoke maturing process. Beneath its deep, ruby-red robe the 2009 vintage reveals delicate aromas of wood, liquorice and cinnamon, blending subtly with lively blueberry and raspberry flavours.

Made from 100% Merlot, the sensation on the palate is exquisitely supple, with voluptuous tannins ensuring a great length of flavour, and spicy notes rubbing shoulders with cigar-box aromas. The elegance and finesse reach their zenith in the finish: luxurious and enchanting with a wonderful freshness embracing a satisfying length.  Drink now to 2030.

Chateau de Candale, Saint-Émilion 2009Chateau de Candale, Saint-Émilion 2009

Chateau de Candale, Saint-Émilion 2009

A Grand Cru Classé property located to the east of the village of Saint-Emilion, not too far from the iconic Chateau Le Tertre Roteboeuf. They own 8-hectares of vines which in 2009 created a complex and compelling Merlot-dominant wine.

Chateau de Candale appears to have got its name from Lady Marguerite of Suffolk Kandall, a descendant of Edward II, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine. Her marriage to Count Jean of Foix in the 15th century allowed her new husband to take on the title of Count of Candale. The Count and Countess of Foix-Candale liked to have wines from their Saint-Emilion stronghold on their table; these wines were already renowned thanks to the strict requirements laid down by the “Jurade” of Saint-Emilion. Six centuries later, Chateau de Candale is onceagain the talk of the town, thanks to the passion of cooper and winegrower Jean-Louis Vicard. “When I first visited the estate I fell under the charm of the historic place with its wooden vats, but mainly the potential of its vineyard.” The 2009 vintage was produced in partnership with Stephane Derenoncourt’s team, Jean-Louis Vicard has the ambition of writing a new page in the history of this Chateau.  A blend of 84% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009 boasts a lovely deep colour, an intense bouquet reveals aromas of ripe red berries and a delicate hint of vanilla combined with subtle cinnamon notes.   A great success in a great year: a sophisticated, delicate wine.  Drink now to 2025.

Owned by Jacky Lorenzetti (Château d’Issan), this is everything you would expect of a great Saint-Estephe; elegant, charming and whole-heartedly approachable.

“Pleasure is all,” says Jacky Lorenzetti eagerly. The owner of Chateau La Rousselière, who counts among France’s most prominent businessmen, has found, with his wife, a new playground on this magnificent estate in Saint-Estephe. The estate which had its heyday in the 18th century, has been given a new opportunity thanks to a carefully-chosen wine team of wine of stardom in the wine Saint-Estephe.

From the Medoc ‘Royal Route’ close to Saint-Estephe, the towers of Chateau La Rousseliere can be seen rising up from an ocean of vines, like sails filled by the gentle breeze from the Gironde Estuary. The terroir and the passion of a wine-loving couple have made this wine one of the stars of Saint-Estephe.

A blend of 50% Merlot,40% Cabernet Sauvignon,10% Cabernet Franc, there's a beautiful, consistent colour, this wine boasts a nose of intense fruit flavours backed up with notes of mocha, vanilla and coffee. The bouquet’s blend of sweet vanilla and roasted coffee bean aromas is the perfect prelude to this wine’s dense, substantial flavour on the palate. The long, elegant finish is enriched by subtle smoky notes, rounding off an enjoyably powerful wine with supple tannins. A charming, resolutely modern Saint-Esephe.  Drink now to 2025.
