Old Road Wine Company

Old Road Wine Company tells the story of special pockets of vineyards grown in the rugged corners of the Franschhoek Valley that chief winemaker, Ryan Puttick, has specially sought out. Puttock works hand in glove with the growers of these unique old vineyards, some of them more being 85 years old, and in such a way to reflect the purest expression by following a philosophy of minimal intervention to coax the wine as gently as possible into the bottle.

Coastal Region

Forming the core of the South African wine industry, the Coastal Region is located in the Western Cape, and accounts for half of the vineyard area in South Africa. Encompassing amongst others, Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Constantia, the area is closely linked with South Africa's viticultural history. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and mountain ranges to the south and east, the topography of the region creates a cooler maritime climate near to the coast and a more settled Mediterranean climate further inland. A wide range of soil types is found here, with granite, schist and sandstone common. Grape varieties planted across the region are diverse, with the cooler regions home to plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, and the warmer inland areas close to the mountain ranges fostering the production of Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Pockets of vineyards also produce Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, blending them to produce a Bordeaux-style red wine.

Elgin

Located near the South Atlantic Ocean, Elgin has a cool climate and a long growing season which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop concentrated fruit character with notable high acidity. The area is most famed for it's vibrant and minerally Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay also produce expressive wines which are full of character.

Pinot Noir

Fickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
