Cheval Blanc

Located in the north-west of Saint-Emilion, on the border with Pomerol, Cheval Blanc is one of the stars of the wine world, and easily the leading estate in Saint-Emilion, responsible for the word’s most famous Cabernet Franc based wine. The 39 hectares of vineyards on the property are planted to around 50 percent Cabernet Franc and 45 percent Merlot with the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon and the soils are either clay or gravel based, which provide the wines with velvety richness and aromatic purity. They need at least a decade of cellaring after release and can age for fifty years or more.

Mendoza

One of the agricultural heartlands of Argentina, the province of Mendoza is just over the size of England and produces a wide variety of produce for domestic and international consumption. It also boasts two-thirds of Argentina's vineyard area. Sitting in the shadow of the Andes, the climate is sunny and dry, and the region receives little rainfall. With an average vineyard height of 1000 metres, altitude is a key factor in Mendoza grape production, as it reduces humidity and the thin air helps the sunlight penetrate and ripen the grapes. Malbec is the undisputed king of Mendoza, producing incredibly expressive wines with deep colour and a dark fruit character, along with a signature violet note. Mendoza holds 80 percent of Argentina's plantings of Malbec and the wines range from fruit-driven everyday styles through to complex, age-worthy wines. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Torrontes and Sauvignon Blanc are also extensively planted across the region.

Red Blend

Red blended wines are created around the world from a multitude of grapes and are often focused on local varieties. Well-blended red wines should make use of complementary varieties, that balance each other well. Cabernet Sauvignon often plays a major part, as does Syrah and Pinot Noir. Australia makes excellent wines from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, known as GSMs. Portuguese red blends typically rely on inky Touriga Nacional, and in Argentina, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are good friends.
