Domaine Perrin

Chateau de Beaucastel, owned by Francois and Jean-Pierre Perrin, is a pioneer in its innovative approach to organic farming. It became fully organic in 1950 and then reached biodynamic status in 1974. Thanks to a high percentage of Morvedre in the blend, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape they produce is not typical and the Perrins believe in natural winemaking, unfiltered wines, and routinely produce long-lived classics that are amongst the finest in the world. Coudoulet de Beaucastel is the second wine of Chateau de Beaucastel - we believe it is better than most Chateauneuf-du-Papes and demonstrates the Perrin brothers dedication and commitment to quality throughout all their wines.

Rhone

The area is split into 2 parts that make very different wines; The Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone, both parts are affected by the strong cold wind known as the mistral that blows intermittently throughout the region keeping the vineyards clear of mold, mildew, pests and frosts but sometimes causing damage to the vines. The Northern Rhone is smaller and has a continental climate with warm days and cool nights. The best vineyards are situated on the steep river banks of the Rhone river and produce complex, age worthy, terroir driven wines from single varietal Syrah. The most notable wines come from Cote Rotie, Hermitage and Cornas. Although the production is mostly red wine, there is excellent single varietal Viognier (Condrieu) produced as well as Marsanne and Roussanne blends. The Southern Rhone is vastly different, the valley flattens out and there is a huge range of terroir producing a range of different styles. The climate is hot and dry which yields ripe, fruit driven wines. There are numerous wines produced under various appellations from simple Cotes du Rhone (The grapes can come from anywhere in the Rhone) which is medium bodied wine with red fruit and spice character, Cotes du Rhone Villages which has a higher level of concentration and complexity. The 9 Cru Villages produce the best quality wines in the Southern Rhone, the most famous of these villages are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras which are rich and full bodied with high alcohol levels. Several grape varieties are permitted and the wines are mostly blends that are dominated by Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault playing supporting roles. A small percentage of white wine is produced from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Clairette.

Southern Rhone

Part of the larger Rhone Valley wine region, the southern Rhone is separated from the northern Rhone by the 45th parallel and its vineyards fan out across the landscape as the region moves south, following the Rhone River towards the Mediterranean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean and the rugged landscape creates different mesoclimates, aiding production of a diverse range of grapes. If the northern Rhone is about quality, the southern Rhone takes a more quantitative approach to its wines and is a significant producer of good-quality, value wines for everyday consumption in both France and across its export markets. Much of this wine is labelled as Cotes du Rhone, an appellation title which is applied to a large quantity of the region's output and provides both entry-level quaffers and age-worthy, top-quality fine wines. Some individually named appellations exist including Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise.

Cotes du Rhone

Not limited to a defined area, Cotes-du-Rhone is a region-wide appellation that covers the production of red, white and rose wines from the Rhone Valley. It is used predominantly in the southern Rhone. Created in 1937, Cotes-du-Rhone status is used for wines of good-quality produced outside specific appellations and is most commonly used for red wines, particularly those made from a blend of the region's most famous red grapes: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. White wines are blended from a variety of grapes, most typically Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Though usually not as prestigious as the famous names Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cote-Rotie or Hermitage, some Cotes-du-Rhone wines are of first-rate quality, and command high prices around the world. They may come from new or established quality-focused producers, or from high-quality vineyards that are outside the individual appellation boundaries.

Southern Rhone White Blend

The Southern Rhone Valley crafts its white wines from a broad range of grapes, and the style is often replicated around the world. Primarily, the varieties include Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Picpoul in varying quantities, but other local grapes may be used. With such a wide variety of grapes used it is nearly impossible to pin down a typical flavour profile. Citrus, floral and stonefruit characters are standard, as is a spicy herbal note in many wines.
