Kilikanoon

Kilikanoon started in 1997 when winemaker Kevin Mitchell purchased a small property of the same name in Penwortham, Clare Valley. Kevin hails from a long line of winemakers and viticulturists (his father is the revered Mort Mitchell) and has an unwavering focus on producing wines with power, elegance, and structure whilst highlighting the individuality of each single vineyard, single varietal as well as quality blends from the exceptional terroir.

South Australia

With household names such as the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra, it should come as no surprise that the state of South Australia is responsible for half of the total national production. For all its size this is no bulk region, with many of Australia's finest wines produced in the state and most of the scientific research and development facilities located in and around Adelaide, the state capital. Bordered by the Great Australian Bight to the south, production is limited to the south-east corner of the state - it is simply too hot further north to produce wine capable grapes. There is a vast range of soils and growing conditions, thanks to topography and climate changes, and the state is capable of producing a broad spectrum of wines. Full-blooded Shiraz, bone-dry cool-climate Riesling, deep-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon, lusty Grenache, and brisk, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay are just the tip of the iceberg.

Clare Valley

The pretty, picturesque region of the Clare Valley, 130 kilometres north of Adelaide, is one of Australia's oldest, with the first grapes planted in the mid-1800s. Most vineyards are located at elevations between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, and variation among the growing sites is distinct, thanks to shading and the climatic differences between the valley floors and sun-facing slopes. Soils are a mixture of alluvial material and limestone. Warm summers and cold nights help produce long-ripening fruit that has fresh, clean acidity. All of these growing conditions make one variety, Riesling, stand above the rest in the Clare Valley. Exotic, punchy flavours of bright lime and crisp apple, a nervy, mineral acidity and the ability to age for 20 years or more, makes for one of the great wines of the world. It's not all about the white stuff in the Clare Valley, however. Shining examples of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon can also be found, and have a touch more definition and sophistication than the bold wines from warmer areas.

Southern Rhone Red Blend

Southern Rhone Red refers to a broad group of grape varieties used in the wines of the southern Rhone in France. Many different grapes can be included, but typically wines will be made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, with Grenache and Syrah the dominant partners. Other examples include Cinsault, Carignan and Clairette. The well-known appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape allows up to 13 different varieties to be used in its blends, but Grenache and Syrah dominate these wines as well.
