De Bortoli

De Bortoli Wines is a third-generation family wine company established in 1938 by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli when they emigrated from Italy to Australia. It was their son Deen, who along with his own children expanded the family business and created the company`s reputation. The Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values at De Bortoli. There is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends. They believe that sustainable vineyard practices will deliver outstanding fruit quality to the winery to produce flawless wines as well as being a great benefit to the environment. The De Bortoli Estate is one of the largest in the Yarra Valley with more than 240 hectares under vine - the main varieties are Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

New South Wales

Once the home of Australian wine, New South Wales has long since been overtaken by South Australia as the heartland of the industry, but it remains significant and produces 30 percent of Australia's total wine output. Dominated by the famous Hunter Valley region, New South Wales is also home to the prominent regions of Orange, Mudgee and Cowra. New vineyard areas are being developed all the time, with producers looking for cooler, higher spots to satisfy the modern demand for wine with fresh acidity and clean, elegant flavour profiles. Further inland, the vast Riverina region, about the size of Switzerland, provides huge volumes of grapes for blending and bulk production as well as some very premium wines from a couple of famous names. New South Wales is home to many grape varieties, but it is its unique and notable Semillon, followed by Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and increasingly, alternative styles such as Viognier, that attract the most attention.

Riverina

The flat tablelands of the Riverina region, dusty, hot and barren for the most part, are home to vast swathes of vines most frequently used for producing inexpensive bulk table wines. But in a region as large as this - it's about the same size as Switzerland - there are pockets of high-quality, and the most well-known Riverina wine town is Griffith, home to De Bortoli and several other producers. Unctuous Botrytised Semillon is the order of the day here, with the famous 'noble rot' developing the sugars in the grapes just before harvest, thanks to the high humidity. De Bortoli's Noble One, first produced in the 1980s, is the best known of these rich dessert wines and is one of the world's most famous stickies.

Shiraz

Shiraz is the name used for the Syrah grape in Australia, and is typically stylistically different from wines labelled Syrah from cooler regions. Deep, dark flavours of blackberry and blackcurrant, alongside notes of eucalyptus, chocolate and black pepper define Australian Shiraz, and the style has found great success in export markets for its powerful, direct nature. More recently the not-so-subtle ‘Barossa’ style has given way to wines made in a more elegant, complex fashion.
