Robert Oatley Vineyards

Robert Oatley Vineyards was founded in 2006 by Robert ‘Bob’ Oatley, of Rosemount Estate and a true Australian wine pioneer. Led by Chris Hancock MW and Head Winemaker Larry Cherubino, Robert Oatley wines is located in Mudgee, New South Wales, three hours north-west of Sydney. The vineyards have good levels of rainfall and strong sunshine, with an elevation of 500m+ which makes the difference, resulting in a longer, cooler, ripening period. Oatley, who died aged 87 in 2016, always adopted the simple mantra that `all wines should be a darn good drink’. Truer words have never been spoken.

Western Australia

It's a bit of a misnomer labelling a wine region Western Australia, but 'Small Corner of South-West Western Australia' doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Western Australia is a vast state, the largest in Australia and bigger than Alaska and Texas combined. Most of it is empty, nearly all of it is barren, and there are parts of the state that have yet to be stepped on by human feet. The south-west coast, with its cool Indian and Southern Ocean breezes and adequate levels of rainfall, is in direct contrast to the rest of Western Australia and is the only place suitable for growing grapes. Margaret River is the most well-known of these and produces elegant, pure examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, which are much different in style from the bolder wines produced in the eastern states. Other regions include Great Southern, Geographe, and the emerging, continental Blackwood Valley. Soils are varied between the regions, and other planted varieties include Riesling, Semillon, Merlot, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.

Great Southern

A large Australian region running along the south coast of Western Australia, the coastal parts of Great Southern are some of the wettest, coolest areas in Australia which put it at great odds with the interior part of the state. The firm influence of the Antarctic-fed Southern Ocean and the exposure to the buffeting westerly trade winds produce these climatic conditions, and the maritime cool-climate wine styles are more European than typical Australian. Further inland, the region is demarcated by rivers that help with irrigation and cool the hotter areas. Soils are a mixture of sandy loams, granite and loess, much like Margaret River to the north-east, but as can be expected are variable across the expanse of a region of this size. Cool-climate varieties prosper, and Riesling is a particular speciality with a flinty, citrus note coupled with refreshing acidity. Savoury Pinot Noir and aromatic Sauvignon Blanc have also found a home alongside the usual Australian mainstays of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Riesling

Riesling is a white grape variety which originated in Germany and now has plantings in many other countries including Alsace, New Zealand and Australia. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.
