Though still wines made from Glera are available, the variety is chiefly responsible for Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine with an easy-going nature and lighter style that has seen exponential growth across major export markets in recent times. Made in the Veneto region of northeast Italy Prosecco is often aromatic and crisp with yellow apple, pear, white peach and apricot flavours with subtle aromas of blossom and citrus.
