Monastrell
Monastrell is the Spanish name for the French grape Mourvedre. A thick-skinned red variety, it grows best in the hot central areas of Spain. High in tannin, Monastrell has plenty of black fruit flavour with characteristics of heady spices and leather. As a grape that needs a warm climate to fully ripen, its stronghold is found along the South-East Mediterranean regions of Spain where it is used to produce rose, dry red and sweet fortified wines.
