Ciacci Piccolomini d`Aragona

Located to the southeast of Montalcino, close to the charming medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate can trace its rich heritage back as far as the 17th Century. After several centuries of ownership under different noble families, the Ciacci family from nearby Castelnuovo dell’Abate purchased the entire estate and retained it for over a hundred years until the death of Countess Elda Ciacci in 1985. As the Countess had no children, she left the property to her long standing and well-respected Estate Manager. Giuseppe Bianchini, much to his amazement. Giuseppe applied a brand new and refreshing philosophy to the Palazzo del Vescovo and winery, which in turn improved quantity and more importantly quality, as well as opening the door to the export market. Sadly, Giuseppe passed away in 2004, however, his hard work and dedication has been continued by his son and daughter, Paolo, and Lucia Bianchini (pictured). The siblings have developed the property with the helping hand of consultant oenologist, Paolo Vagaggini, to become known as one of the most distinguished producers in Brunello di Montalcino.

Tuscany

Gone are the days when Tuscany's global wine exports were limited to wicker-bottomed bottles of cheap Chianti that graced every neighbourhood Italian restaurant from New Jersey to Manchester. Modern Tuscany is a large, diverse region and the beauty of its rolling landscapes and charming nature pulls in the tourists year after year. Red wines of every quality are its vinous calling cards but large quantities of crisp, flavoursome whites and honeyed, sweet wines are also present. The warm Mediterranean climate is a significant factor in Tuscany's consistent ability to produce excellent grapes, thanks to the warm days and cool nights that help the wines get the right balance of sweetness and acidity. Italy's most important red grape, Sangiovese, is right at home in Tuscany and is the backbone of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Around Bolgheri, the famously expensive 'Super Tuscans' have their home and producers such as Antinori and Sassicaia make their famous wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the great Italian red wines and hails from the Tuscany region. Brunello means ‘little brown one’ and refers to the skin of the grape which is a clone of Sangiovese. The Climate here is warm and dry and the grapes are grown on the steep slopes surrounding the medieval walled city of Montalcino. The wines are high in acidity and tannins and often require further aging in the bottle to soften and develop richer more complex flavours and a smoother texture. Typical Brunello has aromas of red and black cherries, plums, olive, spice which continue onto the palate with underlying earthiness, subtle balsamic notes and a long finish.

Bordeaux Red Blend

Red Bordeaux wines are most often made from a blend of grapes, officially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. The term is now used across the world to emulate the style of the famous blended wines of Bordeaux, and will be made in the same style in the majority of examples. When very broadly referring to Bordeaux wines, Left Bank wines will have a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, while Right Bank wines use Merlot as the dominant partner in the blend.
