Vilarnau

Recently established Vilarnau, which was founded in 2005, is a Cava producer with an innovative philosophy, brought to life by its intricate, bright and colourful bottle design which feels like a nod to the essenceof Catalunya and its major city, Barcelona. The winery is sleek and state of the art, and the vineyard lies at 250 metres above sea level where it enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Superb for celebrations, this modern Cava is set for a long history.

Catalunya

The north-eastern Spanish province of Catalunya grows most of its grapes south of the city of Barcelona, but scattered vineyards belonging to the region reach as far north as the French border. The region is home to a range of grapes and styles, including the excellent fine red wines of Priorat, but it is the dry, flavoursome sparkling Cava wines that broader Catalunya can call its own. Traditionally made in the same way as Champagne from a blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo grapes, Cava has a signature apple crispness and bold flavour. To further broaden the appeal, many modern producers add small quantities of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the Cava blend. Volumes are undoubtedly boosted by the millions of tourists who visit Barcelona each year, looking to sample the excellent local delicacies. Outside of Cava, the Catalunya region also produces excellent red table wines, made primarily from Tempranillo, Monastrell and Garnacha.

Cava Blend

The famous sparkling wines of Spain, made in the vineyards of Catalunya, are crafted from a range of grapes. Before the 1980s Cava was strictly made from Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada, but modern times have seen Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Malvasia and Garnacha added to the list of permitted varieties and broadening the potential flavour profiles of the wines. Green apple is a signature characteristic of Cava and is often backed up by notes of citrus, peach and toast.
