G.D. Vajra

Giuseppe Domenico Vajra created the GD Vajra estate in 1972, nestled in the village of Vergne in the commune of Barolo. 60 hectares of vines sit at an altitude of up to 400m, some of the highest in all of Piedmont with several of those in the reknown Bricco delle Viole, Fossati and Coste di Vergne vineyards. Under the watchful eye of Giuseppe’s son, Aldo, this traditional yet innovative estate produces some of the most refined, elegant and Burgundian-styled wines in the region.

Piedmont

Tucked away in north-west Italy just south of the city of Turin lies the treasured wine region of Piedmont, which boasts the highest number of quality DOC and DOCG regions in Italy. Surrounded by mountains and hills on nearly all sides, Piedmont has its own micro-climate, with long hot summers followed by wet autumns and cold, foggy winters. Piedmont is known for wines made in a diverse range of styles. Finicky, tannic Nebbiolo is at the heart of the region and the famous villages of Barolo and Barbaresco make the finest examples of this long-lived red, with its tarry, floral character. Barbera, the most planted variety in the region, has abundant cherry flavours and fresh acidity, while the aromatic, crisp Gavi, a white wine made from the normally unheralded Cortese grape, comes to life in Piedmont. The runaway success story of recent times in Piedmont is sweetish, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti, with a light sparkle and aromatic character.

Dolcetto

The name Dolcetto, meaning little sweet one, comes from the low natural acidity of the grape but Dolcetto almost always produces a dry red wine. It is an early ripening variety which makes it suitable for the cooler, higher vineyard sites in the Piedmont region where Nebbiolo and Barbera fail to ripen. It produces soft, fruity wine wines which are bright ruby in colour with an expressive aroma of red berry fruits, morello cherries with notes of liquorice and spice.
