Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi is synonymous with quality. Founded in 1978 by the Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani when they acquired the `Il Borgo` castle and surrounding vineyards on the slopes of the Montalcino hill. Their ultimate aim was to create a state-of-the-art winery that carefully nurtured the vineyards and their fruit to produce the best premium wines Italy could offer. John and Harry hired one of the greatest Italian winemakers of the time, Ezio Rivella, who installed the philosophy that helped shape the winery and is still upheld to this day. All the estates are still family owned and are in the capable hands of the third generation with Cristina Mariani-May as well as her cousin, James Mariani. Cristina has been involved with the winery since the early 1990’s where her mantra has always been “in the pursuit of excellence”, which has driven Castello Banfi to become one of the most popular and well-respected Italian producers

Piedmont

Tucked away in north-west Italy just south of the city of Turin lies the treasured wine region of Piedmont, which boasts the highest number of quality DOC and DOCG regions in Italy. Surrounded by mountains and hills on nearly all sides, Piedmont has its own micro-climate, with long hot summers followed by wet autumns and cold, foggy winters. Piedmont is known for wines made in a diverse range of styles. Finicky, tannic Nebbiolo is at the heart of the region and the famous villages of Barolo and Barbaresco make the finest examples of this long-lived red, with its tarry, floral character. Barbera, the most planted variety in the region, has abundant cherry flavours and fresh acidity, while the aromatic, crisp Gavi, a white wine made from the normally unheralded Cortese grape, comes to life in Piedmont. The runaway success story of recent times in Piedmont is sweetish, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti, with a light sparkle and aromatic character.

Cortese

Cortese is a white grape variety predominantly grown in the south-eastern regions of Piedmont in Italy. It has been grown in Piedmont for over 400 years and plantings have not spread much further in this time. There are around 1,500 hectares of Cortese planted in Italy, and the grape produces medium-bodied pale-lemon wines with moderate acidity and light, crisp flavours of citrus and green fruit.
