Leone de Castris

The estate was founded in Italy`s Puglia in 1665 by Duke Oronzo, Earl of Lemos and passed into the hands of the de Castris family in the early nineteenth century. The estate became famous with the launch of `Five Roses` in 1943, the first rosato wine to be bottled in Italy. Today, the Leone de Castris estate comprises some 500 hectares with 250 hectares of vineyards throughout the Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto provinces and also buys grapes from local growers. Leone de Castris Negroamaro Il Medaglione is a blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera di Lecce and is aged for four months in oak casks.

Taking up the heel and ankle of Italy's 'boot', the southern Italian region of Puglia is a prolific wine hub, making mostly red wine from a diverse set of grapes. Like many high volume regions, competition from new world countries has seen Puglia change its quantitative approach and move to more focused winemaking with quality production at its core. The northern part of the region produces wine from grapes found across Italy, most commonly Montepulciano and Sangiovese. The south of the region, where some would say the 'real' Puglia begins, is much hotter and drier than the north, and robust, blockbusting red wines made from the local varieties Negroamaro and Primitivo are the norm. So far south, the hot days and warm sea breezes concentrate flavour and produce wines with high tannin and alcohol, with bold, inky colour and black fruit flavours. It feels as though Puglia's quality renaissance is only just beginning, but already the wines are tasting first-rate.

Negroamaro is a red wine grape variety native to southern Italy. It is almost exclusively grown in Puglia (the ‘heel’ of Italy), particularly in Salento. Negroamaro‘s literal translation is black-bitter and produces thick-skinned, deeply coloured purple-black grapes, off high-yielding vines. Wines are earthy, with good tannin and woody spice notes - cinnamon and clove are common. Negroamaro is used mainly in blends, and works well alongside Malvasia Nera, Primitivo and Sangiovese.
