A welcome new addition to our Rioja collection, Bodegas RODA is a contemporary winery (founded in 1987) in comparison to its historic neighbours such as La Rioja Alta, CVNE, López de Heredia and Muga, situated in the renowned town of Haro. Despite its youth, RODA has rapidly gained respect throughout the region (as well as in Ribera del Duero) for their meticulous research and development into the Tempranillo grape variety, with a focus on select vineyards sites, specific clones, as well as planting at higher altitude and the use of French oak barrels, to produce excellent quality, pure, luscious, and modern Rioja wines.

Located in the between central Spain and the heart of the Basque country, Rioja has been one of Spain's hallmark wine producing regions for generations. Famous for its wines made from a blend of red grapes dominated by Tempranillo and Garnacha, or Grenache, modern incarnations of Rioja are bright and laden with red-fruit character, underpinned by sweet spice and vanilla. The Cantabrian mountains to the north of the region protect the vineyards from the harsh Atlantic-derived weather, and Rioja enjoys a warm, dry climate. Most Rioja wines receive oak treatment, which gives them their signature vanilla and sweet spice flavours. The amount of time they age in oak defines their category. Rioja Joven wines receive little or no oak; while Rioja Crianza gets a minimum of one year in barrel followed by one year in bottle. Reserva wines get a year in oak and minimum two years in bottle while the region's finest wines, Rioja Gran Reserva, cannot be released until they have undergone five years ageing, two of which will be in oak.

Tempranillo is a variety of widely grown black grape, and is most famously used in the wines of Spain and Portugal. Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend. Tempranillo wines are ruby-red in colour, with notes of red-berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herbs. The grape is also extensively grown in Argentina and Chile.
