Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859, Louis Jadot is one of the most prestigious vignerons in all of Burgundy. The maison bears the name of its creator and has become one of the largest proprietors of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the region. Winemaking is now under the guidance of the talented Jacques Lardiere, who joined the company in 1970 and believes that his mission is to intervene with nature as little as possible. As a result, there have been no synthetic herbicides or fertilisers used for many years on the estate and they have also been trialling biodynamic viticultural practices on a small 14 hectare plot in and around Beaune. If deemed successful, the techniques will be implemented in other vineyards. Domaine Louis Jadot uphold the highest standards and have an unwavering stance when it comes to the quality of their wines, making them a very reliable source of Burgundy.

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Cote de Nuits

The northern half of the Cote d'Or region, the Cote de Nuits is some of the world's prime winemaking real estate, and the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, which makes up 95 percent of the region's plantings. Pinot Noir from the Cote de Nuits has a deeper colour and longer life than wine from Pommard or Volnay, say, further south in the neighbouring Cote de Beaune. Stretching 16 kilometres north to south and home to 25 Grand Cru sites and 135 Premier Cru appellations, the region's municipal centre is the small town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. While the Cote de Nuits is not as prolific as its southerly neighbour, it is a region that prides itself on quality over quantity. Of the many Grand Cru sites, the prestigious appellations of Vosne-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny produce ethereal versions of Pinot Noir, usually for a stratospheric price. Nothing comes cheap on the Cote de Nuits, but if you're looking for diamonds (or red rubies) this is the best mine to prospect in.

Vougeot

A small commune in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits region, nestled between Vosnee-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot is a historic wine-producing village, home to four Premier Cru and one large Grand Cru vineyard amongst its number. Uniquely for the Cote De Nuits, one-third of Vougeot's output is white, but the majority of plantings are of Pinot Noir, the flagship red grape of Burgundy. Grapes grow at altitudes of between 240 and 280 metres, and the soils are a mixture of limestone, clay and fine-textured marls. The commune is dominated by its well-known Grand Cru vineyard, Clos de Vougeot, but this attention should not detract from the class of the other vineyards in the village, which are well known for their quality. Pinot Noir from Vougeot is solidly built, with a deep, luminous colour and powerful red and black fruit flavours. Despite this boldness, Vougeot wines are well-known for their fine tannins and underlying delicacy. They have the propensity to age into velvety, complex wines with savoury notes and superb structure.

Pinot Noir

Fickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
