Maison Roche de Bellene

Maison Roche de Bellene was founded in 2008 by Nicolas Potel after he parted company with his previous partners who own the right to the `Nicolas Potel` label. Located in Burgundy`s Cote de Beaune, the estate is working towards full biodynamic status and currently they use a number of natural and sustainable processes to produce their wines. Nicolas works with a number of growers and has an old-vine strategy, with the oldest vines well over 100. Nicolas is one of the most exciting ‘new generation’ winemakers in Burgundy producing exceptional vintages year after year.

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Cote de Nuits

The northern half of the Cote d'Or region, the Cote de Nuits is some of the world's prime winemaking real estate, and the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, which makes up 95 percent of the region's plantings. Pinot Noir from the Cote de Nuits has a deeper colour and longer life than wine from Pommard or Volnay, say, further south in the neighbouring Cote de Beaune. Stretching 16 kilometres north to south and home to 25 Grand Cru sites and 135 Premier Cru appellations, the region's municipal centre is the small town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. While the Cote de Nuits is not as prolific as its southerly neighbour, it is a region that prides itself on quality over quantity. Of the many Grand Cru sites, the prestigious appellations of Vosne-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny produce ethereal versions of Pinot Noir, usually for a stratospheric price. Nothing comes cheap on the Cote de Nuits, but if you're looking for diamonds (or red rubies) this is the best mine to prospect in.

Nuits-Saint-Georges

The main town of the Cote de Nuits, though smaller than the bustling wine hub of Beaune to the south and overshadowed by the city of Dijon to the north, holds great importance as a viticultural town. Though Nuits-Saint-Georges has no Grand Cru vineyards amongst its 310 hectares of vines, it has 41 Premier Cru vineyards that are considered to be of very high quality. Divided in two by the town itself, the vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges are made up of deep marl-limestone soils and pebbly alluvium nearer to the river Meuzin. East and south-east vineyard exposures help the grapes get the sun they need while the gently sloping vineyards reach altitudes of around 300 metres. Almost all of the wine produced in Nuits-Saint-Georges is Pinot Noir and the intensely coloured wines are laden with cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant flavours with some floral and liquorice notes. The chewy, muscular structure gives way to velvety sophistication as the wine matures, with sophisticated characters of leather, truffle and game.

Chardonnay

Produced in wine regions across the world, Chardonnay is a white wine producing grape, and is made in many different styles. From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
