Robert Oatley Vineyards was founded in 2006 by Robert ‘Bob’ Oatley, of Rosemount Estate and a true Australian wine pioneer. Led by Chris Hancock MW and Head Winemaker Larry Cherubino, Robert Oatley wines is located in Mudgee, New South Wales, three hours north-west of Sydney. The vineyards have good levels of rainfall and strong sunshine, with an elevation of 500m+ which makes the difference, resulting in a longer, cooler, ripening period. Oatley, who died aged 87 in 2016, always adopted the simple mantra that `all wines should be a darn good drink’. Truer words have never been spoken.

Dominated by the famous Hunter Valley region, New South Wales is also home to the prominent regions of Orange, Mudgee and Cowra. New vineyard areas are being developed all the time, with producers looking for cooler, higher spots to satisfy the modern demand for wine with fresh acidity and clean, elegant flavour profiles. Further inland, the vast Riverina region, about the size of Switzerland, provides huge volumes of grapes for blending and bulk production as well as some very premium wines from a couple of famous names. New South Wales is home to many grape varieties, but it is its unique and notable Semillon, followed by Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and increasingly, alternative styles such as Viognier, that attract the most attention.

Deep, dark flavours of blackberry and blackcurrant, alongside notes of eucalyptus, chocolate and black pepper define Australian Shiraz, and the style has found great success in export markets for its powerful, direct nature. More recently the not-so-subtle ‘Barossa’ style has given way to wines made in a more elegant, complex fashion.
