Hancock and Hancock

Chris Hancock MW has been making excellent wines for over three decades in McLaren Vale and is one of Australia’s most coveted winemakers. He has worked for Robert Oatley Vineyards since 1962, working closely with Bob himself and is now Deputy Executive Chairman. In 2015, Hancock & Hancock was a new venture started by Chris and his brother John, from their La Colline vineyard in McLaren Vale known for its south east facing old-vines (average age of 80 years), which produce full, rich yet ready to drink wines.

South Australia

With household names such as the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra, it should come as no surprise that the state of South Australia is responsible for half of the total national production. For all its size this is no bulk region, with many of Australia's finest wines produced in the state and most of the scientific research and development facilities located in and around Adelaide, the state capital. Bordered by the Great Australian Bight to the south, production is limited to the south-east corner of the state - it is simply too hot further north to produce wine capable grapes. There is a vast range of soils and growing conditions, thanks to topography and climate changes, and the state is capable of producing a broad spectrum of wines. Full-blooded Shiraz, bone-dry cool-climate Riesling, deep-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon, lusty Grenache, and brisk, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay are just the tip of the iceberg.

McLaren Vale

Thanks to its location next to the sea, and bordered by the Mount Lofty ranges, the location of McLaren Vale is ideal for growing grapes. Add adequate rainfall, a long, warm summer and a cooling effect thanks to airflow from the sea, and you have vineyard utopia. This did not go unnoticed by Australian wine luminary John Reynell, who planted the first grapes in South Australia in 1838. Variable is the key word in the region, with a wide variety of soil types, a mixed topography sheltering and exposing sites to the cool winds which blow in off the sea and climate conditions changing with a site's proximity to the mountains. Above all, a real fruit salad of grape varieties takes up vineyard space in McLaren Vale. Unsurprisingly, Shiraz leads the charge and is blended with Grenache and Mourvedre to make award winning GSM wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Tempranillo are all found among the red vineyards, while Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc fly the flag for the white varieties.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a variety of widely grown black grape, and is most famously used in the wines of Spain and Portugal. Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend. Tempranillo wines are ruby-red in colour, with notes of red-berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herbs. The grape is also extensively grown in Argentina and Chile.
