Domaines Schlumberger

Domaines Schlumberger is a family-run vineyard established in 1810. The estate is located in Alsace, in the east of France and is currently run by the sixth and seventh generations of the Schlumberger family. From small beginnings of 20 hectares of vines the domaine now measures 140 hectares of vines with 70 hectares classified as Grands Crus. Domaines Schlumberger respect the environment and continue to plough and work the vineyards with a team of four horses. They respect sustainable faming and 30 hectares is used for biodynamic viticulture to ensure great quality wines for the future to come. The vineyard has an exceptional location, situated on the slope of the Vosges, benefitting from the best exposures on very steep slopes. Vines grown at Domaines Schlumberger include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Muscat.

Alsace

The pretty chocolate-box villages of Alsace, tucked away in the north-east corner of France, are home to some of the world's great white wines. Close to the German border south-west of the city of Strasbourg, the Franco-Germanic heritage of Alsace is evident in its wines, food and people. Alsace is one of the driest wine regions in France thanks to its position in the rain shadow of the Vosges Mountains to the west, which protect the vineyards and provide excellent conditions for ripening grapes. With a hat-tip to its history, Alsace specialises in the traditional German varieties Riesling and Gewurztraminer and is also known for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat. Unlike other French regions, the label states the wine variety, which helps consumers know what they are getting. Alsace wines are typically aromatic with a clean, pure, fruit character and steely citrus and floral flavours.

Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is a white grape variety with a high natural sugar content used to make wine with floral, orange citrus and tropical flavours - typically lychees, rose petals and passionfruit. The grape performs best in cooler climates thanks to its low acidity not coping with the extra sugar produced in warmer climates and becoming flat and drab. The best examples are from the Alsace in North Eastern France, Germany, but good examples can also be found in the New World, notably New Zealand and Argentina.
