Croft

The House of Croft was founded over three hundred years ago. The earliest evidence of the firm`s activity as a Port shipper dates from 1678, coincidentally the year of the first ever recorded shipments of Port wine. The company was orginally known as Phayre & Bradley after its founding partners and took its present name in 1736 when it was joined by John Croft, a member of an old and distinguished family of Yorkshire wine merchants.

Douro

A couple of hours drive inland from the historic trading city of Oporto the picturesque Douro Valley, with its steep terraces and wide meandering river, is the beating heart of Portuguese wine. The Douro is most famous for its delicious, fortified Port wines, made from a blend of traditional grapes and boosted with distilled spirit to ward off oxidation. Produced in a range of styles, from rich, juicy non-vintage ruby ports, to the delicate, lighter tawny bottled at anything from 10 to 50 years of age, Port is Portugal's most famous export. While Port remains at the forefront of the Douro's production, the region is developing an excellent reputation for its table wines. Made from a range of grapes, most prominently Touriga Nacional, a native variety most famous for its use in the finest vintage ports. Touriga Nacional's thick skins and rich flavours create bold, powerful wines with excellent structure and tannin.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a variety of widely grown black grape, and is most famously used in the wines of Spain and Portugal. Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend. Tempranillo wines are ruby-red in colour, with notes of red-berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herbs. The grape is also extensively grown in Argentina and Chile.
