Carlos Lucas Vinhos

Owner Carlos Lucas was a former farmer who turned his hand to winemaking over 25 years ago and is now a talented winemaker boasting a wealth of experience from estates throughout Portugal. He created the Quinta do Ribeiro Santo estate on the site of a former monastery 15 years ago, due to the poor granite soils where he crafts wines from native varietals with a sense of place, never mforgetting the importance of traditional techniques.

Douro

A couple of hours drive inland from the historic trading city of Oporto the picturesque Douro Valley, with its steep terraces and wide meandering river, is the beating heart of Portuguese wine. The Douro is most famous for its delicious, fortified Port wines, made from a blend of traditional grapes and boosted with distilled spirit to ward off oxidation. Produced in a range of styles, from rich, juicy non-vintage ruby ports, to the delicate, lighter tawny bottled at anything from 10 to 50 years of age, Port is Portugal's most famous export. While Port remains at the forefront of the Douro's production, the region is developing an excellent reputation for its table wines. Made from a range of grapes, most prominently Touriga Nacional, a native variety most famous for its use in the finest vintage ports. Touriga Nacional's thick skins and rich flavours create bold, powerful wines with excellent structure and tannin.

Red Blend

Red blended wines are created around the world from a multitude of grapes and are often focused on local varieties. Well-blended red wines should make use of complementary varieties, that balance each other well. Cabernet Sauvignon often plays a major part, as does Syrah and Pinot Noir. Australia makes excellent wines from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, known as GSMs. Portuguese red blends typically rely on inky Touriga Nacional, and in Argentina, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are good friends.
