Abruzzo

The once neglected region of Abruzzo, on the Adriatic coast of Central Italy, is home to a range of varieties, but for many years famous for only two of them – red Montepulciano and white Trebbiano. For many years, the Abruzzi region relied on high-yielding, undistinguished bulk wine to drive its output, but recent times have seen a renewed focus on quality and the vineyards are now producing some excellent wines from a diverse set of grapes. The area is home to some quality production zones, the most prestigious being the DOCG Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Montepulciano typically produces smooth, lightly tannic and medium bodied wines, with easy-going fruit and gentle character.

Montepulciano

Montepluciano is a red wine grape variety grown in Italy. Importantly, it should not be confused with the Tuscan wine Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, made from Sangiovese and named for the village it is produced in. The grape Montepulciano is widely planted throughout Central and Southern Italy, most notably in Abruzzi. Montepulciano wine produces large yields and has moderate acidity with wines that are deeply coloured, imparting flavours and aromas of violet, cherry, wild berries, liquorice and tobacco.
