Domaine Wachau

Domäne Wachau is one of Austria’s iconic producers where its terraced vineyards are strung along the steep banks of the Danube River, on a patchwork of specific terroirs. Headed up by Master of Wine Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber, this dynamic co-operative cultivates some of the finest wines in the region and is a model for sustainable winemaking and grower collaboration. They craft wines that exude wonderful freshness, balance, and sheer drinkability.

Kamptal

A small, acclaimed region of north-east Austria, Kamptal is known for producing exceptional wines from vineyards planted on slopes overlooking the river Kamp. Like much of eastern Austria, the climate is influenced by the cool forests to the west and warm plains to the east. Warm days and cold nights help ripen the grapes while retaining acidity – vital aspects of the production of the Kamptal's signature grapes, Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. At the lower, flatter end of the region, the clay based soils produce concentrated, richly flavoured expressions of Gruner Veltliner, which comes loaded with typical flinty spice and citrus flavour. Upstream the precipitously steep slopes are dedicated to Riesling, which grows well on the stony topsoil, and produces clean mineral wines with a full range of vibrant green fruit flavours and lip-smacking acidity.

Gruner Veltliner

An up-and-coming grape variety, Gruner Veltliner is planted primarily in Austria with additional European plantings in the Czech Republic and Slovakia along with small amounts of New World vines in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Gruner, as it is known, is considered to be a grape of great quality, producing pure, racy wines with green-fruit and a peppery, herbal character. The best wines age beautifully and the wine develops complexity, with layers of honey and stone-fruit.
