Chateau Corbin, St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe

An excellent property that we have been following for several years under the watchful eye of the fourth female generation with Annabelle Cruse-Bardinet. The 13-hectares of vines are split into two blocks located in the north-west of St. Émilion upon the Corbin plateau where the higher proportion of clay subsoil for the area (opposed to limestone), produces rich, yet ripe and refined wines. We are big admirers of Corbin having discovered it during the first lockdown when tasting it side by side with Canon... we were so impressed we lovingly refer to it as our `mini Canon`! We have been consistently wowed with Annabelle`s work overs the years and it is quite rightly one of our rising star estates.

Undoubtedly the most well-known fine wine region on the planet, the French wine region of Bordeaux spans 120,000 hectares of vineyard and is demarcated by the Gironde Estuary and its two main tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne. The region is divided into the Left Bank, for vineyards located on the left bank of the Garonne River, and the Right Bank, for vineyards on the right bank of the Dordogne. Famous Left Bank appellations such as Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Margaux are well-known for their quality, but value is also found in Haut-Medoc and Moulis. The Right Bank is well known for Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, while the upcoming regions of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon should not be overlooked. Close to the city Sauternes and Barsac make some of the world's best sweet wines, while the appellations of Pessac-Leognan and Graves do a fine line in rich reds and full-bodied whites. Red Bordeaux wines are made from a blend of grapes, and the permitted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and, less commonly, Malbec and Carmenere. Very broadly speaking, Right Bank wines will have a predominance of Merlot, while Left Bank wines will rely on Cabernet Sauvignon as the primary variety in a blend. White wines, both dry and sweet, are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

The picturesque, historic town of Saint-Emilion, just to the north of the Dordogne River is at the centre of the well-known appellation of the same name in the Libournais region of Bordeaux. Saint-Emilion's wine history goes back to Roman times, and is home to some of the world's longest-lived and most highly regarded red wines. Unlike the vineyards of the Medoc, Merlot is the grape of choice in Saint-Emilion and makes up about two-thirds of plantings. Merlot ripens more consistently in the cooler clay soils of the region, and its principal blending partner, Cabernet Franc, adds seasoning and spice. The rounder, fuller flavours of Merlot make the wines of Saint-Emilion more approachable in their youth, though they can age for extended periods. Two of the best-known estates, Figeac and Cheval Blanc, lie in the north-east of Saint-Emilion on a broad plateau of gravels, much like the vineyards of Medoc and Graves, allowing them to successfully ripen the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes which dominate their red blends.

Merlot is a red grape variety grown around the world. Used most famously in Bordeaux, Merlot`s light tannin, and soft, supple character pairs perfectly with the darker, sterner, Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot wines have medium body with flavours of red berries, plums currants and vanilla. Varietally, Merlot makes for approachable wines with an easy-drinking character, that are popular with consumers the world over.
