Chateau Clinet

Located on the highest part of the famous Pomerol plateau, Chateau Clinet is a highly regarded Bordeaux chateau who operate their vineyards with minimal intervention and avoid using chemicals wherever possible. The 11.27 hectares are planted with vines situated on ancient gravel and deep clay with iron deposit in the subsoil. Vineyards are planted with 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc. The introduction of hand-harvesting, and new winemaking techniques has elevated their position in the Bordeaux pecking order.

Chateau Clinet

Undoubtedly the most well-known fine wine region on the planet, the French wine region of Bordeaux spans 120,000 hectares of vineyard and is demarcated by the Gironde Estuary and its two main tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne. The region is divided into the Left Bank, for vineyards located on the left bank of the Garonne River, and the Right Bank, for vineyards on the right bank of the Dordogne. Famous Left Bank appellations such as Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Margaux are well-known for their quality, but value is also found in Haut-Medoc and Moulis. The Right Bank is well known for Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, while the upcoming regions of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon should not be overlooked. Close to the city Sauternes and Barsac make some of the world's best sweet wines, while the appellations of Pessac-Leognan and Graves do a fine line in rich reds and full-bodied whites. Red Bordeaux wines are made from a blend of grapes, and the permitted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and, less commonly, Malbec and Carmenere. Very broadly speaking, Right Bank wines will have a predominance of Merlot, while Left Bank wines will rely on Cabernet Sauvignon as the primary variety in a blend. White wines, both dry and sweet, are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

Far from the grand chateaux and bustling activity around the ports of Bordeaux city, the appellation of Pomerol has a laid back, countrified air. There is no urban hub amongst the densely configured vineyards, and the crisscrossing straight roads can make it difficult to get your bearings. Amongst this mild confusion lie some of Bordeaux's smallest and most acclaimed estates, producing wines that can demand higher prices than even the celebrated first growths of the Medoc and Graves. Lying to the north-east of the large town of Libourne, Pomerol was not considered much more than a producer of fairly good everyday wine until as late as 50 years ago. Since then producers such as Petrus, Lafleur, Le Pin, Gazin and l'Eglise-Clinet have raised the reputation of the region, and the Merlot-dominant wines are famed for their richness and purity of fruit. Cabernet Franc is used to add spice and structure and the wines can be very long-lived. Boutique in nature and often scarce with demand growing, Pomerol is well worth seeking out.

Bordeaux Red Blend

Red Bordeaux wines are most often made from a blend of grapes, officially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. The term is now used across the world to emulate the style of the famous blended wines of Bordeaux, and will be made in the same style in the majority of examples. When very broadly referring to Bordeaux wines, Left Bank wines will have a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, while Right Bank wines use Merlot as the dominant partner in the blend.
