Domaine Faiveley

Since 2007, Domaine Faiveley has been under the guidance of Bernard Hervet. The 115 hectare domaine is split between an estate of 78 hectares in Mercurey and 37 hectares in the Cote d’Or and is now one of the largest domaines in Burgundy. The vineyards are run with tight precision and nothing is left to chance through a controlled vineyard management program. Their aim for elegance and finesse is now being rewarded and each wine possesses an individual character and quality that is a great reflection of the domaine`s terroir.

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Cote Chalonnaise

Directly south of the Cote de Beaune in Burgundy, the large growing region of Cote Chalonnaise is made up of five key communes, Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey, Givry and Montagny. Located close to the celebrated wine regions planted along the Cote d'Or escarpment further north, the vineyards of Cote Chalonnaise are scattered across the rolling landscape as growers and producers look for the best limestone-clay rich sites to grow their grapes. The climate is continental, with warm days and cool nights and the long summers provide optimum conditions for ripening grapes. Except for Bouzeron, which makes wines from the Aligote grape, the majority of the Cote Chalonnaise is planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Though the wines from Cote Chalonnaise may not always have the richness and complexity of their esteemed northerly cousins, they also don't have the price tag, making the region a great option for high quality, great value Burgundy wine.

Mercurey

Accounting for two-thirds of the wine produced in Burgundy's Cote Chalonnais, Mercurey is a large, prolific appellation located in the heart of the region. The dense patchwork of vineyards amongst the rolling hills stretches to over 600 hectares, and the majority of its production is Pinot Noir. Clay-limestone soils are abundant, and the vines are at heights of between 230 to 320 metres, with the long warm summers in the region providing optimum ripening conditions. The red wines of Mercurey are more intensely coloured and deeply flavoured than the other communes in the region, thanks to strict appellation laws limiting yields, and the excellent terroir. Wines are typically well-structured with cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavours, with time in bottle revealing notes of spice and chocolate. The best wines of Mercurey are as good as the wines of the famous Cote d'Or, at a fraction of the price.

Pinot Noir

Fickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
