Vega Sicilia is Spain’s finest red wine, its `Grand Cru Classe` or `First Growth` if you like, located in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. Founded in 1864 and planted with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec from Bordeaux, along with a clone of Tempranillo, Vega Sicilia began to gather international steam at the beginning of the 20th century. Currently owned by the Alvarez family, the estate ensures its formidable position through its dedication to meticulous vineyard practice, exceptional fruit, and immaculate winemaking. Vega Sicilia continues to fly the flag for ultra-premium Spanish wine and rivals the best on earth.

A clone of Tempranillo, the region's law dictates that all Toro wines must contain at least 75 percent Tinta del Toro, typically producing concentrated, powerful red wines. The region is located high on the Castilla y Leon plateau and relies on the Duero river for its water supply. Like the other regions in the area, Toro endures a strongly continental climate with harsh winters and long hot summers. The area has little rainfall and the sun-baked vines and producers work hard to keep alcohol levels in check. A real up and coming region, Toro has seen significant investment in recent times as producers from outside the region realise the potential of its wines.

Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend. Tempranillo wines are ruby-red in colour, with notes of red-berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herbs. The grape is also extensively grown in Argentina and Chile.
