Castello Banfi is synonymous with quality. Founded in 1978 by the Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani when they acquired the `Il Borgo` castle and surrounding vineyards on the slopes of the Montalcino hill. Their ultimate aim was to create a state-of-the-art winery that carefully nurtured the vineyards and their fruit to produce the best premium wines Italy could offer. John and Harry hired one of the greatest Italian winemakers of the time, Ezio Rivella, who installed the philosophy that helped shape the winery and is still upheld to this day. All the estates are still family owned and are in the capable hands of the third generation with Cristina Mariani-May as well as her cousin, James Mariani. Cristina has been involved with the winery since the early 1990’s where her mantra has always been “in the pursuit of excellence”, which has driven Castello Banfi to become one of the most popular and well-respected Italian producers

Gone are the days when Tuscany's global wine exports were limited to wicker-bottomed bottles of cheap Chianti that graced every neighbourhood Italian restaurant from New Jersey to Manchester. Red wines of every quality are its vinous calling cards but large quantities of crisp, flavoursome whites and honeyed, sweet wines are also present. The warm Mediterranean climate is a significant factor in Tuscany's consistent ability to produce excellent grapes, thanks to the warm days and cool nights that help the wines get the right balance of sweetness and acidity. Italy's most important red grape, Sangiovese, is right at home in Tuscany and is the backbone of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Around Bolgheri, the famously expensive 'Super Tuscans' have their home and producers such as Antinori and Sassicaia make their famous wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

Vermentino is a late-ripening white grape variety, primarily found in Italy. Vermentino is one of the easier varieties to grow as it is vigorous and resistant to drought, and usually ripens towards the middle of the harvest cycle. Vermentino produces wines that are pale-straw in colour and relatively low in alcohol. Typically Vermentino has flavours of green apple and lime, with refreshing acidity, good richness and medium body.
