  • A good ruby red colour with only a little fade at the rim despite 10 years of age. This Secrets displays a beguiling array of bramble fruits and Asian spices with a hint of classic Medoc "cigar box". The palate shows a well balanced acidity with dark and intense fruit, full of chocolate, leather, and blackberries, but unlike many other 1996's there is no hard tannin. In fact the Secret's tannin is soft and ripe leading to a surprisingly long and pleasing finish. There is plenty of flesh on this attractive wine. For those looking for an insight into what the brooding first wine is like, this offers plenty of hope. More importantly it demonstrates how well second wines can deliver excellent quality at a fraction of the price of the more expensive first wines. GREAT VALUE.
