Craggy Range
Two years ago, the first time Craggy Range earned winery of the Year honours, their production was 10,000 cases. Now, this young winery has ramped up to 50,000 cases. It's success and growth is tied to the vines; to a brilliant viticulturist, Steve Smith; and to the business acumen of Terry Peabody, who financed the project. Peabody had been interested in the fine wine business when he met Steve Smith, a man on a mission to save Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay. Steve Smith recognized the vine potential of this site. Mining interests were planning to quarry the site when Peabody came on board just in time to block them.
